Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Program

Location: Sudbury (ON), Port Colborne (ON), Shebandowan (ON)
Client: Vale Canada
Client Sectors: Mining
Services: Engineering, Hydrogeology & Geosciences, IH/OHS, Geomatics

BluMetric collected groundwater samples on a semi-annual basis from approximately 1,600 monitoring wells and surface water samples on a tri-annual basis from approximately 500 surface water stations for six years.

Most of the sites were accessed by road, with access to the sampling locations by truck, boat, all-terrain vehicles and on foot. The surface water quality data collected in the sampling program were compared with Site Specific Standards as established by the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). The groundwater quality data were compared against Table 2 & 3 Site Conditions Standards (SCS) as outlined in Ontario Regulation 153/04.

Annual reports were prepared for groundwater and surface water monitoring. In relation to this project, BluMetric also completed:

  • Surveying;
  • Site inventories for 32 inactive sites;
  • Closure plan monitoring and reporting; and,
  • Permit to Take Water (PTTW) monitoring, reporting and evaluations.
