The Opportunity

BluMetric Environmental Inc. is searching for an Occupational Hygienist, Health and Safety Specialist with experience in hazardous building materials. The individual will work as part of a multi-discipline team of occupational hygienists/technologists and occupational health & safety professionals, delivering quality occupational hygiene (OH) services to our clients in a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, industrial, health care, education, mining, construction, and government (federal, provincial, and municipal). You must be motivated and client-focused, quality-oriented, and thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.

Preferred work locations are Ottawa or Toronto, though location is flexible for the right incumbent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the full cycle of client projects: proposal writing, OH/hazardous material strategy development, conducting and/or supervising field work, and report writing
  • Prepare drawings and specifications for abatement/decontamination procedures, as well as cost estimates for related work
  • Conduct quantitative worker exposure assessments of chemical, physical and biological agents in a wide variety of sectors
  • Conduct indoor air quality surveys, designated substance surveys, hazardous building material surveys and interpret findings and analysis results
  • Write inspection and contaminant evaluation reports based on analysis results
  • Devise and communicate recommendations on the management of various contaminants
  • Assist with development of mould, asbestos, and lead abatement specifications and oversee remediation/abatement including air sampling
  • Deliver effective training (and assist to develop) on occupational hygiene or health and safety related programs and topics
  • Assist with occupational hygiene, health and & safety compliance/ conformance and management systems audits
  • Work with the business development team to grow the practice in the company
  • Assist with the development of corporate health & safety from time to time
  • Act as a health and safety resource for others in BluMetric

Qualifications, Education, and Skills

  • An undergraduate or master’s degree in occupational hygiene, occupational health and safety, environmental science or engineering
  • 5-7 years or more of experience in occupational hygiene/health and safety including designated material management or construction/demolition/rehabilitation site management
  • A strong understanding, familiarity, and appreciation of a fast-paced consulting work environment
  • Strong familiarity with hazardous materials/ designated substances surveys, indoor air quality and mould assessments, supervision of asbestos, mould, and lead abatement
  • Excellent technical knowledge of the principals and comprehensive practice of occupational hygiene and health and safety
  • Knowledge of provincial, territorial, and federal occupational health and safety legislation
  • Proficient in the use of IH related equipment such as sampling pumps, sound level meters, dosimeters, and a variety of direct-reading instruments
  • Knowledge and experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to adapt behavior, opinions, tactics and strategies to different situations, individuals, or changing priorities
  • Highly effective communication skillsets – reading, writing, and verbal
  • Willingness to collaborate within the team and the company
  • Willingness to travel and spend occasional periods away from your normal place of work is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation is required
  • ROH, CIH, CRSP designation(s) considered an asset but not mandatory
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written), French fluency considered a strong asset
